final model :: north facade
The urban corner lot is set in downtown Ann Arbor. As an undergrad the assignment was to design a K-5 elementary school.
The design process began with a visit to the Burns Park Elementary. Along with one other student we interviewed teachers and the principle to learn about the challenges faced adapting a 35+ year old building to current curriculum. Teachers mainly wanted to address mechanical issues but our of the conversation we learned a lot about how the hallway served as an extension of the classroom for more advanced students.
The design for this school is built around progression. Students age through the building as they advance to the upper levels of the school. As their classrooms physically advance they are given opportunity to engage with older and younger children. Programming for academics, athletics and multipurpose spaces happen in flexible spaces throughout the building.
