Music Grad School
An undergrad architecture thesis tasked our studio with design of a graduate level music school set on a narrow urban lot. The site in downtown Ann Arbor sat between two 3-4 story structures (see massing model photos).
The design process began with a visit to the existing music school. Initial study of revealed very dedicated spaces for study and performance but limited space for collaboration and engagement. Formal decisions of the existing music school were informed by the physical appearance of a piano.
A guiding premise is the need to creating increasingly more public space for presentation. The building is a concert venue but the audience varies on based on access ownership of building users. The music students themselves are prioritized above all.
